Celebrating International Women's Day - 8th March 2019

Well, the Angel’s Share Club were let loose again on Friday night and to celebrate International Women’s Day on the 8th March 2019 we joined our new friends at The Good Spirits Co in Glasgow for their Spirited Women Tasting Night…a celebration of spirits blended and distilled by women around the world.
Once again the team at TGSC didn’t disappoint!

The Good Spirits Co – Spirited Women

A great selection from around the world, presented by Sara, sharing her knowledge of each, we learned lots & grew our understanding of Gin, Tequila, Rum and Cognac, as well as trying a couple of unfamiliar whiskies! Fantastic to see such a great turnout of women for this event too – the last couple of tastings we have attended there were very much male-dominated, so come on girls, we need to up the numbers and get more of you tasting whisky!

The full lineup for the evening consisted of...

1. Lussa Gin from the Isle of Jura

A deliciously fresh, citrusy floral Gin which was an all-round favourite with the gin lovers in the room, including us!

2. Calle 23 Blanco Tequila

My personal favourite of the evening and I certainly won’t be buying any Tequila that isn’t 100% Agave from now on!

3. Angostura 1787 15yo Caribbean Rum

This is a proper grown-up rum, not one for adding Coke! The distinct raisin and cinnamon flavours with a slightly dry texture, feel like you could be drinking a Cinnamon Bun!

4. Ben Riach Sherry Matured 12 yo Speyside Whisky

What can we say – it’s a 12-year-old sherry cask from Speyside – what’s not to love!

5. Ragnaud-Sabourin No 20 Ugni Blanc Cognac

Cognac from the premier Grande Champagne region of France – The most expensive bottle of the evening, coming in at around £88 – but worth it for such a sophisticated and elegant Cognac, meant to be sipped and lingered over at the end of an evening…this is a very special dram!

6. Bunnahabhain Toiteach a Dhà Islay Whisky

I think I may have been spoiled at our last visit to the Good Spirits Co, having sampled the £160 Octomore 10yo – a superb example of Islay whisky, so I wasn’t overly impressed with this – my partner in whisky, however – she loved it!

To Sum Up…

So the big surprises of the evening were, for me, the Tequila – 100% Agave and so smooth and delicious I could drink it straight – and the Bunnahabhain – which although a bit peaty and smoky – was the favourite of the other half of the ASC – who incidentally doesn’t like peaty, smoky whiskies!
We learn something new every time we step into this little treasure trove of loveliness that is The Good Spirits Co, and we will be back again soon guys – thanks for another great evening!
